Radical Drumming

Location: covered bridge by york rd.

Time: Thursdays at 5:00pm

We are doing a free school class focusing on radical drumming, with the long term goal of producing a radical anarchist marching band to provide a strong backing for protests and to keep up morale and enthusiasm amongst the protestors.

Different concepts that we will be drawing on are:

  • do it yourself drum making, in which we will encourage and guide the patrons of the class to make their own drums from found objects!

  • We will look at some history of drums and music within the European military movement and the practical applications when used in “war”/protest situations.

  • we will also look at the use of drums in military oppression and colonization. We will illustrate the need to steal back military style drumming from the death squads, aka the army, and other historical contexts of drums.

  • We will teach basic theory and how to read music, sticks technics and composition and arrangement of drumming music.

The intention will be to provide a solid class structure where people can learn and develop their skills, while newer members can develop the basics. We plan on offering multi-skill levels, from beginners to more advanced players, and establishing a non-hierarchical structure to the instruments and to the diverse group of people, so that everybody feels welcome. We recognize that drum troops traditionally are dominated by individuals with penises, therefore we intent on making call outs to people of all genders, sexual orientations, and racial/cultural backgrounds.
